Dan had decided to tell Clare about his change in circumstances on Thursday morning. He wanted to be clear that Prescott Adams would not be paying for anything for Gemma and Nathan now. While he drove out to her house, Lucy—who refused to go with him—met Millie at the Fire Academy gym to play some racquetball. The two of them waited at a table for their court to open up, making chitchat. Because Millie was a close friend, Dan gave Lucy permission to confide in her about the inheritance. Before she could, though, someone came up to them. “Lucy, Millie, you’re looking well today.”

“Thanks, Jack. Join us?”

As he sat, Lucy studied the staff psychologist, a tall dark-haired man who’d helped numerous HCFD members and their families cope with firefighting and any problems in their personal lives. He’d been a lifesaver when the fire department had been attacked by a shooter.

She studied his face. “I see the glow of marriage hasn’t worn off yet.”

Last fall, Jack and another instructor at the Academy, Tess Righetti, had married after a tumultuous courtship.

“It hasn’t, but I’ll tell you, Teresa keeps me hopping. We just had a big row about the new recruit class. I doubt things will ever be calm for us.” Since his smile was mile wide, Lucy could tell he was thrilled by his newfound happiness.

“That’s great, Jack.” This from Millie. “I loved working with Tess on my stint at the Academy. She’s tough but fair.”

“You two enjoying your new firehouse?”

“I do.” This from Millie. “Thanks for helping with that shit at Engine 6. And recommending I be part of Eleven.”

“You made recommendations?” Lucy asked.

“Yeah, Luce. You and Dan were a given. I’m glad you got on the same shift.”

A lot more had happened. But she couldn’t talk about that yet, not even to Jack or Millie.

“How is Dan?” Jack asked. “He’s one of my favorite guys in the department.”

“He has news. He said I could share it with Millie, and I was about to. I’m sure he’d want you to know, after you helped him through that awful year.”

When she told them about Harold Hopewell and his bequests, Jack leaned back in his chair and chuckled. “Hallelujah,” he said. “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”

Millie beamed. “This is so great, Lucy. So, so great for him. His wife is Enemy Number One at our station house.”

Jack shook his head. “I always thought their divorce was a crime. Mostly because I believed Clare was in love with him even as she left him.”

“Stop right there, Dr. Harrison.” This in Millie’s stern voice. “We won’t listen to anybody defend that horrid woman.”

He held up his hands, arrest-style. “Okay, okay.” He touched Lucy’s arm. “Give him my best, will you?”

“Yeah, I will, Doc.”

The court freed up, so Jack left them to it. On their way there, Millie said, “Boy, Luce, you’re one lucky woman.”

“What do you mean?”

“You and Dan spend all your time together. You’ll be the benefit of some of that moolah.
